Berglandmilch Opens Biomass Heating Plant in Voitsberg – An Important Step Toward Sustainable Energy Supply
Voitsberg, March 2026: With the commissioning of a new biomass heating plant at its Voitsberg site, Berglandmilch is taking another significant step toward sustainable energy supply and climate protection. The official opening of the modern facility took place on March 14, 2026.
The Voitsberg dairy is the largest milk processor in Styria and an important part of the Berglandmilch cooperative. Around 1,500 dairy farmers from Styria and Burgenland supply the site daily with approximately 800,000 kilograms of milk, which is processed into fresh dairy products and cheese. In total, more than 50 different types of cheese are produced in Voitsberg and marketed both in Austria and internationally.
With the new biomass heating plant, Berglandmilch is making a targeted investment in a future-oriented and resource-efficient energy supply. The state-of-the-art facility operates exclusively on regional biomass in the form of wood chips and enables a reduction in CO₂ emissions of more than 90 percent. This makes a significant contribution to the decarbonization of the site.
A special feature of the project is the closed regional cycle: the plant is operated exclusively with wood sourced from the region. This not only ensures sustainable energy generation but also strengthens regional value creation. The biomass plant has a capacity of 6 megawatts and processes around 180 cubic meters of wood chips per day, which are converted into clean energy. Through this investment, the Voitsberg site will become independent of fossil fuels such as natural gas in its energy supply.
“With this project, we are taking another important step on our path toward sustainable energy supply. At the same time, we are strengthening regional cooperation with our farming suppliers and creating a closed cycle of renewable raw materials and energy,” emphasizes Berglandmilch.
With this new facility, Berglandmilch once again underscores its commitment to combining ecological responsibility, regional value creation, and long-term economic viability. The biomass heating plant in Voitsberg thus represents another milestone for climate-friendly and sustainable dairy processing in Austria.
