Berglandmilch abolishes farm collection fee – relief of €300 per farm per year

Wels, January 13, 2025

The farm collection fee originates from a time when many dairy farmers still brought milk churns to a collection point, from where the dairy would then pick up the milk. Larger dairy farmers were able, by paying a so-called farm collection fee, to have their milk collected directly from their farms. Many farmers made use of this service once they produced enough milk to qualify for on-farm collection.

Today, the threshold to apply for farm collection is 75,000 liters of milk supplied per year. This is no longer achieved only by large farms, but now by the majority of milk producers.

While the average milk delivery per farm was still 27,000 kg in 1995, this figure has risen to around 160,000 liters of milk supplied per farm per year. Farm collection has shifted from being the exception to becoming the rule.

This provided sufficient reason for Berglandmilch to review whether the cost contribution required from farmers for farm collection still made sense. For medium-sized farms with milk deliveries of up to 200,000 liters per year, the flat-rate farm collection fee represents a burden of 0.15 cents/kg of milk, or nearly €300 per year. This is a significant cost factor in an industry where every euro of added value is hard-earned.

Against this background, the Management Board of Berglandmilch has decided to abolish the outdated farm collection fee as of January 1, 2025. Once the thresholds for farm collection are met, no fees will be charged for farm collection in the future.

“This represents relief for Berglandmilch farms and sends a strong signal of appreciation and future-oriented thinking. Outdated regulations must be reviewed and, where necessary, abolished,” says Berglandmilch Chairman Stefan Lindner.
