Schärdinger and Tirol Milch cheese specialities secured sensational awards

Each year, the country’s best cheeses are awarded the Käsekaiser.

The latest winners were chosen from a total of 191 entries, and the coveted statues were awarded in ten categories. In the first phase, a panel of 80 judges, made up of cheese connoisseurs, trade journalists, producers and industry representatives, selected the five best cheeses in each category from among all entries. An independent committee of national and international experts then chose the best of the best. They were rated for aroma and taste, appearance, body and consistency.

Five Schärdinger cheeses and one Tirol Milch cheese speciality were nominated, underling the company’s professionalism and competence in the area of cheese-making.

Schärdinger and Tirol Milch cheese specialities secured a sensational four awards at the 2018 Käsekaisers.

 

In the ‘soft cheese’ category: Schärdinger Kaisertaler

Schärdinger Kaisertaler is a soft cheese with an especially smooth-melting texture. The natural rind has a pure, fine dusting of milk mould, giving this cheese a delicate bite. This is now the second Käsekaiser for Schärdinger Kaisertaler.

 

In the ‘mild & fine sliced cheese’ category: Schärdinger Bergbaron

Schärdinger Bergbaron is Austria’s most popular cheese. Coinciding with its 40th anniversary in 2017, it has won its tenth Käsekaiser.

 

In the ‘hard cheese’ category: Tirol Milch Urtyroler

Tirol Milch Urtyroler has previously won several awards both nationally and internationally. This premium mountain cheese speciality is matured for at least 12 months. This gives it an incomparably strong & piquant, savoury flavour. The protein crystals produced during the long maturing process underline the uniqueness of this cheese speciality. A true pleasure for all the senses!

 

In the ‘cheese specialities and traditions’ category: Schärdinger Affineur wine cheese

Schärdinger Affineur wine cheese is a soft cheese speciality from Styria. It is matured in wine yeast lees and has a distinctive, almost black rind with a fine dusting of milk mould.

 


World Cheese Awards 2017-2018 1 x gold, 4 x silver and 3 x bronze

The World Cheese Awards (WCA) recognises the world’s best cheese products. The biggest cheese competition of its kind, held mid-November in London, attracted a record number of entries. Some 3001 international cheese varieties from 35 countries were entered. Each one was assessed by an international panel of judges consisting of more than 250 experts from 29 different nations.

 

Gold for Tirol Milch Urtyroler

Tirol Milch Urtyroler is made from the finest Tirolean farmers’ milk. This premium mountain cheese speciality is matured for at least 12 months. Silver for Tirol Milch Kaiser Max, Tirol Milch Bergkäse g.U., Schärdinger Asmonte and Schärdinger Affineur Le Rosé

Schärdinger Asmonte is a strong and piquant hard cheese in a hearty Italian style and is regularly brushed with linseed oil during its six-month ripening pause.

Tirol Milch Kaiser Max is a savoury, piquant semi-hard cheese made according to age-old tradition and treated with red cultures during its six-week ripening period.

Tirol Milch Mountain Cheese is ripened for at least 14 weeks, which gives it a strong, highly aromatic taste. It is also suitable for longer storage and develops a special piquancy with increasing age.

Schärdinger Affineur Le Rosé hard cheese, refined with rosé wine, herbs and spices, features a surface structure of grapes and grape leaves making it a unique cheese speciality.

 

Bronze for Tirol Milch Tiroler Alpzirler, Tirol Milch Tiroler Weinzirler und Schärdinger Kärntner Rahmlaib

Tirol Milch Weinzirler is left to ripen for at least six months, during which it develops its distinctive strong and piquant flavour. The cheese is then refined with red wine for a further two days, which gives it its special taste and dark-red rind. .
